Why you need to have a design plan
Wondering where to begin planning for your update?
YOU’RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
WHETHER ITS A RENOVATION, REDESIGN, NEW BUILD, OR REMODEL, OR WHATEVER WORD YOU PREFER TO USE, THE STEPS TO PLANNING THEM ARE ALL THE SAME.
SO, IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT UPDATING YOUR HOME, THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF IS TO GET A REAL DESIGN PLAN.
Preparation is the key to success.
It’s a road map, a communication tool.
YOUR FIRST OBSTACLE IS: TOO MANY OPTIONS
If you’re like most people you realize that you need to do something with your home, but you may be stuck because you don’t know what you should do or could do to it. For most of us, this is a very daunting task because it comes with too many options to choose from.
I have to tell you something about my husband. He hates shopping! Shopping of any kind, it doesn’t even matter if it’s something that he is interested in, he hates it. I often tease him when I catch him looking at stuff on his own, “Don’t look now, but you’re shopping.” He always looks like he has been totally busted too. Just like a little kid. He is the type of guy that goes into a store, gets that one thing that he knows he needs and gets out as fast as he can because if he stays, money might randomly jump out of his pocket. He never just looks.
I say this to make a point. If you don’t know what your options are, you will not be able to make informed decisions. This definitely applies to doing a renovation, and since a renovation has permanent consequences, it’s usually quite costly. So you want to make sure you are getting the most for your money and doing it right. This means knowing what your options are. What products are out there that you didn’t even know you needed.
In other words, you have to shop around.
You have no idea how many people go into a renovation with only a vague idea of what they want, or have never explored more than one option. Some don’t even have solid measurements of what they intent to do. WHAT?!
Some people just have difficulty thinking in this way. They can’t visualize it, so it doesn’t occur to them that they could do something different, and cool, and not break the bank, while they’re at it.
THINK OF IT AS A COMMUNICATION TOOL
YOU WILL NEED TO PUT IT IN WRITING
The Plan is to have a communication tool that helps all parties involved actually see what the design plan is, otherwise you’re left trying to describe what you want to do and risk being misunderstood. I know when I try to describe something, I stand there pointing and waving my arms and doing all kinds of things to try and get whoever I’m talking to to understand what I’m seeing in my head. And sometimes, its just… well… let’s just say that’s not the way you want to communicate to your builder. I’m just sayin’.
You need to be able to show your contractor exactly what you want to do, so that the both of you are on the same page and understand what the finished plan is supposed to look like.
Now if I listen closely, I can hear you all the way from here, saying; “I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT?!” and “WHERE DO I EVEN START?”
I am going to show you everything you need to create a design plan, like a designer. I’ll show you how to draw a floor plan, an elevation, with measurements. You will have a written explanation, so that there are no misunderstandings. You will know how everything fits and functions properly, as to avoid mistakes. You will make better design decisions as you go along because you will have a big picture.
THIS IS YOUR SECOND OBSTACLE: BUDGET
Sometimes just knowing that it’s going to cost a good chunk of money is enough to deter some people from ever starting. Since nobody wants to make a mistake, it gets put on the back burner, sometimes indefinitely. However, once you start making a list and figuring it all out, you will be able to set a realistic budget. I know that staying on budget is another matter, but getting a price range to get you started is super important.
There are a number of reasons that people get overwhelmed by the task of updating their home and whatever “it” is, it will hinder them from ever moving forward. I am here to say that it doesn’t have to be that way, you can take it one step at a time.
This site is all about either giving you the tools to create a design plan for yourself or having me create one for your. If you choose the DIY route, that okay, I’ve got your back. You can do this!
I know it sounds daunting, but it won’t be. I promise. If you just stick with me, step by step, I will show you how to create a well laid design plan. I will show you how to figure it all out and what questions to ask, as well as keeping track of everything. I will give you the tools so that you will be better equipped to tackle any project.
