I know you are curious about working with an e-designer; you probably have never had the opportunity before and don’t know all of the ins and outs. You may have a lot of questions or you may not even know what to ask. Don’t worry, I will walk you through it and help you feel comfortable with every step of the process.
I am going to give you a run-down on some of the main tasks I can help you with, what is involved, and generally how long it might take to accomplish. This way, when we talk about your project on our discovery call, you will have a better understanding of what you can ask me to do for you. While I love working the whole design from beginning to end, you may only need one or two of these services to get you on track with your renovation/design. Whatever the case may be, I am here to help you make the most of your home improvement dollars and help your project look great when it’s finished.
My services are organized by tasks
This is always the first thing I will need to do to design your space.
First of all, it helps me become intimately familiar with it and all of its nooks and crannies. As I create your floor plan I gain a very good sense of what that space is like, how I might change something in it, and how the furniture and traffic patterns will go and so on. In short, it gets my creative juices flowing.
I use a software program to build your floor plan with the measurements and images that you provide me with. Don’t worry, directions for collecting these measurements are provided in your Welcome Packet that I send out after a payment for services is received.
The amount of time that it takes to complete a floor plan depends on many factors. If your space is fairly simple and straightforward, it will take as little as a few hours.
In some cases, I will be drawing out a whole house. Doing a whole house floor plan is much more time consuming; these will generally take a few days to get all of the details put in and looking just right. If you need a floor plan of a multi-level home it will take extra time.
These are great for a real estate listing to show the layout of your house.
Planning your space
Working out how your furniture or cabinets will be laid out is extremely important to your new design plan. We will be looking at things like lifestyle and how you function normally in that room. Making the most out of the space you have is part of my job. I consider it a challenge to make sure you have enough storage for everything you need, and that everything you have has a beautiful place of its own.
It is also imperative that every room has a beautiful, purposeful layout with plenty of room to move around and feel comfortable. Let’s face it, furniture is an investment. They are pieces that you will be living with for years to come. Getting the right size is only one piece of the puzzle. We also need to make sure that each piece meets all of your needs.
This service is included whenever you purchase a digital floor plan.
Proposing changes to your home
This is one of my favorite parts of my job. I love reworking a floor plan.
I always look at the functions that need to be addressed within the space. While solving the issues you may have with your house, I consider how you want to live and work within it in order to create the ideal solutions for your home. Function always comes before form, so we will problem solve first, and then we will make it beautiful too.
Proposed changes may include anything from small fixes like adding wainscotting, to a full gut job of your kitchen to reconfigure your layout. It all depends on what you decide you need from your space, what we have to work with, what you are comfortable tackling, and what your proposed budget for this project looks like.
Design concept MOOD BOARD
After receiving your questionnaire and the inspiration images you send me, I will put together a couple of preliminary Concept Mood Boards for your project. This is where I take all of your ideas and put them together with my ideas and come up with something that is totally terrific.
I will usually do two of these that are different from each other so you have some options to think about. After I present them to you, you will then have the opportunity to give your feedback about what you love and which parts you may want to change.
Once I have your feedback from these boards, I will put a final mood board together that you will approve before moving forward. Remember, this is used to give us our driving directions. We will not be selecting specific products in this stage of the game.
This is a good service for you if you just need to solidify a style, concept and color direction for your design.
Selecting Colors and Materials
Now that we have a good solid plan of the changes we need to make and what will be going into your room, we need to decide how we are going to dress it up. This layer is all about selecting your surfaces. You will most definitely need paint colors and fabrics, but you will need lots of other materials too, and all of these materials will have colors and options to choose from. You might need new flooring, a stone facade for your fireplace, or updated backsplash tile. Whatever your project calls for, we will choose the materials for making it happen beautifully.
You will receive a product board that will include images, product info, and links for purchasing. I will also include recommended quantities when possible.
It is my goal for you to have confidence that the products you are putting into your home are right for your situation and budget, and to make it as easy as possible to purchase these materials.
Selecting the perfect furniture
Purchasing furniture is an investment that most people don’t do often in life, but when you do, you need to be wise about your buying decisions. There is a big wide world of furniture, lighting, and home decor out there to choose from, and they come in many quality levels which are reflected in their price points. It is my job to know where to hunt for your perfect items.
It is also my job to know how to weed out the wrong choices based on the criteria of your project, and how to select the right choice based on color, material, quality, durability, price, style, and size.
This is where hiring a designer comes in handy because we have built our careers on building relationships with a variety of manufacturers and retailers so that we can offer our clients the best in unique and up-to-date products. These relationships allow us to offer you the best prices possible on superior products.
We don’t always have to present high-end products though. If you need to work with a budget that doesn’t allow you to do that, I am perfectly happy (happier in fact) sourcing your products from manufacturers or retail stores that will keep your budget happy. My main goal is to give you the best product for your project.
Sourcing is a huge part of my job while designing an incredible space. Shopping for furniture and shopping for decor are very different tasks. By separating these two categories it allows me to focus on what your room needs and where I shop for your items. It also helps your budget stay on track.
For any of my sourcing packages, you will receive a product board that will include images, product info, and links for purchasing. I will also include recommended quantities when possible.
A lighting plan is about making sure your space is lit properly and has a variety of lighting options available to you. To do this, I will create an electrical plan that determines how much light you need for a variety of tasks in a given area, and determine where your fixtures are to be placed.
In an electrical plan, I use your floor plan and your space plan to determine where the lights are placed in order to draw up an electrical floor plan for your electrician to implement. This will ensure that fixtures and switches are placed correctly and your electrician knows what you need him to do for you.
Of course, I also help you select your light fixtures, as well, when you purchase this service. However, if you only need help with selecting your lighting fixtures and don’t need the electrical plans, I suggest purchasing an accessories package.
This layer of the design can be very complicated with many things to work out before any actual work is done or products are purchased. I have an article on creating a lighting plan here if you want to learn more. Whether you are working with a new build or remodeling, you will want to make sure that the amount of light you have is sufficient for the size of your room and the activities that will take place there.
This is not a stand-alone service as I need your floor plan in order to do a lighting plan.
